Sleepover in Svolvaer

After each day of hiking and/or cycling Norway's rugged shoreline, jagged mountains and abandoned farms, we hope to hit one of the Lofoten Island's tiny fishing shanties (converted to love shack for two, of course). It may even have an ice fishing hole in the center of the floor!

REAL Spa Treatment!!

The Blue Lagoon--the biggest, steamiest, other-worldly geothermal bathtub in the world. Set in a tortured black lava field, just off the road between Keflavik and Grandavik, this eerie, milky-blue super-heated sea-water spa would make a great backdrop to ridley scott's next film! imagine roiling clouds of steam and people daubed in blue-white silica mud. how will we recognize bjork?!

We hear Reykjaik is renowned for its citizens' passion for the weekend pub crawl. From midnight till about 5 am, the city cafes and bistros are said to become raucous, beer-soaked bars. More than the drinking, our sources tell us, it's the upbeat energy that's extraordinary--and catchy.

Whale Watching off the coast of Iceland

(They don't have a picture of this) We'll get astonishingly close to whales and dolphins on quiet oak-hulled boats. If we're really silent--and lucky--we may spot humpback, fin, sei or blue whales, too.

Bodo to Svolvaer boat fare

Hopefully not on a sailboat, but that's the only picture they had with a boat in it--this is to go from the mainland to the Lofoten islands--above the arctic circle!

Getting to A

The shortest distance between Points A (a town) and B (Svolvaer) is a ferry ride. Help get us get to and from A (that's the name of the well-preserved 19th century Norwegian fishing village set high atop forbidding rocks. It's connected by wooden footbridges. Its shores are lined with red-painted rorbuer (winter shanties), many of which jut into the sea. We'll snack on rack-dried cod that line the streets.

Not only is the first mini vodka shot free, but it's said that Dostoevsky used to hang out in this homey basement eatery. We'll be on the lookout for gloomy philosophical types!

Sjavarkjallarinn has been called THE BEST dining experience to be had in Reykjavik. With its subterranean atmosphere and exotic dishes, it's probably at the top of the $$ charts, too, so we'll stick to the whatever appies we can find that combine succulent crustaceans with ... pomegranate, coconut, litchi and chilli!
