JAMES' STORY: On 21 June 2013, I didn't get punched for kissing THE girl. On 20 June 2015, she said "YES".

CARLY'S STORY: James (or you may know him as Jimmy) and I met in July 2011 at 1st Intelligence Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. We were both assigned to the training section where the experienced Chief Warrant Officer (i.e. James) took the 'boot' Lieutenant (i.e. me) under his wing and showed me the ropes. This consisted of the following three rules:
1. Don't wear your uniform to work;
2. If you look busy, you are busy;
3. Establish rapport above all else.

In August 2011, James received orders to report to a higher headquarters at 1st Marine Expeditionary Force as the Operations Officer which placed him on the far side of the base (right next to the ocean I might add...). He was about 30 minutes away. Even though we had been separated by time and distance, frequent collaboration and training exercises in preparation for the upcoming deployment still brought us together at regular intervals.

This would eventually turn into a year-long deployment for us to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan from November 2011 through December 2012. James again thought it appropriate to show me the ropes when it came to deployment. Things like:
- how to wear your gear
- what you are really supposed to pack from the gear list
- what holster to buy
- ...and you know, all the big decisions that everyone has to go through.

A few months in, James quickly found that he had created what no Chief Warrant Officer ever wants ... a competent, decisive, teeth-bearing Lieutenant. At this point in our relationship I had observed, taken notes, strategized, and then when he wasn't looking, I found a voice and whether he wanted it or not, I wasn't afraid to use it. However I should note that through all my mentorship with James, that deployment started a friendship that found us able to rely on each other for perspective and confidence.

Now those who know us, understand that communication is one of our best qualities. I have always known what I wanted and with superb articulation (that leaves no doubts in anyone's mind), I am able to acquire whatever I set my sights on. James is patient and observant, and with experience to support his decision-making, he is capable of persuasion to achieve his end goals. With these skill sets, one would naturally conclude that we must have been a story that began with love at first sight. As it turns out, that's not how it happened at all.

After returning from deployment, we had several months of James' making dinner, movie nights, friend "dates", and weekend road trips before the fateful day when James FINALLY worked up the courage to make his move.

On 21 June 2012, during an episode of "Suits", James weighed his options and then made the decision that he was either going to kiss me or get punched in the throat trying. Things obviously ended well for him! And now that communication was more fluid, we were on a path that allowed us to move into our apartment in Carlsbad, CA -- a dream come true and a refuge from the nomadic lifestyle that we had lived for so long in the military. That apartment became our home, a place that was filled with love and acceptance.

In early 2014, we received orders, I went to Recruiting Station Albany, NY and James to Marine Corps Intelligence Agency Quantico, VA. We were both upset at the thought of being separated but determined to manage as we had in the past with long distance relationships. A year of separate lives, professions, and households solidified that we could survive separately but all we really wanted was to be together.

In response to that, on June 20, 2015, James surprised me with a bouquet of Gerber daisies, a ring, and the question I had been waiting to be asked at the Pineapple Fountain, Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC!

Our story may not have begun with love at first sight, but with each passing moment, the love that grows between us is one for the story books! You have all been a part of this love story in one way or another and we hope that you can join us in Las Vegas for the events leading up to and including the wedding ceremony.

Because James and I have been forced to create dual households, we would like to request that offers of wedding gifts be donations to our honeymoon fund (http://www.honeymoonwishes.com/Honeymoon-Registry-276398-.html). This will allow us to spend a little more time together before James deploys to Japan for six months in January.

Finally, James and I both thank you in advance for considering spending this joyous and memorable day with us!

Love,

Carolyn and James
