Jennifer Keeler & Steve Openshaw

Our Story

Steve and I met at a friend's party late September 2004. I had just graduated from APU. Steve was attending Cal Poly Pomona. I had met his friend Christina at another party earlier that year. When we started to hang out we realized how often we must have crossed paths while I was at APU as he had friends living there as well and was often in that Starbuck's on the corner. But it wasn't meant to be until the party. Almost five years later and here we all are.

I had bugged Steve over the past two years as to when we would be getting married. With us, it wasn't a matter of "if", it was a matter of "when" as I had told him a year into our relationship that he was going to marry me. I remember the night before we were out at a dinner cruise and I started my usual "when will it happen" fit. He calmly reassured me that it would happen but right then was not the time.

The next evening we decide to go to Disneyland. No big deal, we hang out there quite often as we have passes. We were walking around Cinderella's Castle and everyone was sitting on the curbs waiting for a parade to start. I made a comment that we should have someone take our picture in front of the castle. All the times we've been there, we didn't have a picture of us in front of the castle.

He said sure and asked me to find someone to take the picture for us. Well, I hate asking people to do that and I get really shy usually. I looked around and asked him for the camera so I could hand it to whomever I would ask. He was taking an awful long time to find the stupid thing in the backpack he brought (I would later find out that he was trying to keep me from seeing the box with the ring in it). Eventually he handed it to me and I found a mom and daughter to take our picture. I asked the question and they agreed.

As we're standing there waiting for them to take the picture, Steve told the woman that she would want to take quite a few pictures of this. I was confused but figured he meant that if someone walked in front of us then yes she'd have to take a few. Then out of the corner of my eye I see Steve kneeling next to me. "What are you doing?" I asked him; frustrated that he was "screwing up" the picture.

Then I saw the box... He turned to me and said that he loved me and that it would make him very happy if I would marry him. (this is not verbatim as I was kind of lost in everything going on so forgive me if I goofed the actual wording). Of course I said YES! I then started crying (surprise, surprise). I heard the woman with our camera yell "OH MY GOD!!" and then I hear "click-click-click-click" as she snapped away.
