The Story of Us
Steven and I met over 15 years ago thanks to a very dear mutual friend, Morris Clarke. Unbeknownst to me Morris had designated himself as Steven’s agent and my confidante. One day in gym class at Charles E. Jordan High School, Morris drew my attention to a quiet and very good looking basketball player who just happened to be wearing the basketball jersey of my favorite Duke player, Grant Hill, #33. Immediately my interest was piqued and I knew from that moment on if nothing else together we would be great Duke fans.
Over the next couple of weeks Steven and I spent countless hours on the phone discussing Duke's chances, Coach K's legacy and how we HATED unc with a passion. Somehow between our nightly 3 hour phone conversations and weekly Def Comedy Jam episodes we became a couple. Over the following 3 years we were each other's biggest fans. There were numerous basketball games, dance recitals, basketball camps and musicals and throughout them all we shared everything, no matter how big or small.
Eventually time allowed us to grow separately and then blessed us with the opportunity to grow together and we are forever grateful that we were able to discover each other all over again. We have both watched each other grow from teenagers to adults and have marveled at the path which has led us to our destiny.
From first love to real love to very best friend that is the story of us. So many people have said that Steven and I were meant to be and comment on how great it is to see us together. This always makes us smile as if we share some secret to which no one else is privy. We know that we are not the same people who met and fell in love over 15 years ago. We’re better. We’re lucky. We are lucky in that we have found the person that we are meant to be with across time and space, the person we want to stand beside now and forever.
Our journey at this point in our lives has not been a fairy tale but it has been a storybook love and this is our happily ever after.
