May 22nd, 2010
As Nneamaka puts it, “Thank God for “Journey’s Mercies” and New Family Unifications!” On May 22nd, 2010, Chuka and Ifeoma Onyejekwe and their family hosted the Traditional Marriage of their daughter Nneamaka. The event took place in their family compound in Oraifite, Anambra state, Nigeria. The ceremony began when the suitor, Dr. Nonso Ezema, arrived with an entourage. It included his entire family; his townspeople of Nsukka, Enugu State; his mother’s townspeople of Ideato, Imo State; friends from organizations, including Daughters of Imo, Sisters of St. Mulumbas, IMT Enugu professors, UNTH Hospital coworkers and school mates. It was an entourage of almost 500 people. The crowd danced to the beat of the music performed by a dance group and band hired by the family. Food was bountiful and drinks were plenty. Nneamaka’s first entrance was led by her Ashebi as the traditional Igbo bride, to greet all guests. Her second entrance was to find her suitor with the traditional cup of palm wine. Later on, the couple made a grand entrance as husband and wife. The Igbankwu cake was baked by the suitor’s oldest sister, Mrs. Chioma Nebo, an engineer for Shell Oil. Each guest departed with gift bags of serving trays, hand-held fans, handkerchiefs, plates & bowls, dishing spoons, pens and can openers customized by the bride & groom families. The day was a beautiful success, with sunny and bright weather in the middle of the rainy season, and the rain staying away until the guests were safely back home.
