Well, it was a Tuesday night, Jake was driving back from Southfield and I was working late at the office. He called asking if I wanted to go out for dinner when he got back into town. I had to finish up a few things and it took a bit longer than I anticipated, so I had to push back my estimated "leaving the office time" a few times (not knowing of course that he had post-engagement reservations that were revolving around the time I left work.)
I finally got out of there and Jake picked me up that my condo for a nice dinner at Charles Crab. That seemed a bit fancy for a casual Tuesday night, but after a long day I wasn't complaining about a good meal with good company. On the drive over Jake explained this whole elaborate plan about why we had to park on the other side of the river and walk to the restaurant to avoid the Lady Gaga concert traffic jams downtown. To give Jake credit, the whole story was very well thought out and completely plausible given how crazy Lady Gaga fans are rumored to be.
So there we were, walking over the bridge after witnessing a near accident when someone tried make a u-turn in the middle of the road to get our parking spot. At this point it’s after 7pm and I’m quite hungry, so when Jake stopped on the bridge to look at ducks I was thinking, “Really…come on…it’s a river, the ducks will still be there later after we eat.” However, my hostile attitude about duck watching quickly faded as Jake pulled out a ring box, dropped to one knee and proposed. Since you are all reading this on our wedding website I guess it kind of goes without saying that I said “YES!” He placed the ring on my finger, we kissed, and Jake pulled flowers out from behind the beam of the bridge. Then he told me to “hang on” while he ran across the bridge and pulled out MORE flowers from a beam on the other side. When I asked why two bouquets, he replied that he was worried one would get stolen. Then we flagged down a stoned Lady Gaga fan to take our first picture as an engaged couple. He managed to focus enough to get both of us in the picture, but didn’t both to get the camera focused before he took the photo. Needless to say, it’s a bit blurry.
After the photo, we hurried back to the car and drove over to the restaurant. As he drove, I called my family to tell them the big news. And for all you women out there reading this, I’ll have you know, I didn’t cry at all until I talked to my mom. Pretty impressive, huh?!!!
The rest of the evening was a blur of continuous smiling, a champagne toast to our future, and a delicious meal with my new fiancé. To pull the evening off successfully, Jake had to tell a series of lies to get all the logistics of the evening to run smoothly. After leaving the restaurant, a slightly exhausted Jake turned to me and told me he would never lie to me again…it was just too much work to keep all the lies straight! |
